Whether you’re buying flooring, ordering carpet, estimating paint, or listing a property, it all starts with one number: the square footage. Measure it wrong and you either run short mid-project or pay for material you’ll never use. This guide shows you how to calculate square footage for any room — including odd shapes — how much waste to add, and how to turn it into a cost. For instant results, use our free Square Footage Calculator.
How to Calculate the Square Footage of a Room
For a standard rectangular room, square footage is simply length times width:
Square footage = Length (ft) × Width (ft)
Example: a room 12 feet long and 10 feet wide is 12 × 10 = 120 square feet. That’s the whole trick for rectangles. Our Square Footage Calculator does it instantly and shows the result in square meters too.
Measuring When You Have Inches
Rooms rarely measure in whole feet. To handle inches, convert them to a decimal foot by dividing by 12:
- 3 inches = 0.25 ft
- 6 inches = 0.5 ft
- 9 inches = 0.75 ft
So a wall measuring 12 ft 6 in is 12.5 ft. A room 12 ft 6 in by 10 ft is 12.5 × 10 = 125 sq ft. The calculator has separate feet and inches boxes so you can skip the mental math.
How to Measure an L-Shaped or Irregular Room
This is where people get stuck — but the solution is simple: break the space into rectangles. Divide an L-shaped room into two rectangles, calculate each one’s area, and add them together. Any irregular space can be split into simple shapes the same way. In our calculator, just click “Add Room / Area” for each section and it totals everything automatically.
Round and Triangular Areas
Not everything is rectangular. For circular areas (like a round patio), use:
Area = π × radius² (radius = diameter ÷ 2)
A round area 10 ft across has a 5 ft radius, so the area is 3.1416 × 5² ≈ 78.5 sq ft. For triangles, use ½ × base × height. The calculator includes both shapes so you don’t need the formulas.
Square Feet to Square Meters
Buying material specced in metric, or working internationally? The conversion is fixed: multiply square feet by 0.0929 to get square meters, or multiply square meters by 10.764 to get square feet. A 120 sq ft room is about 11.15 sq m. Our calculator shows both units side by side, plus square yards and acres, so you never convert by hand.
How Much Waste Should You Add?
Never order the exact area — you need extra for offcuts, mistakes, and future repairs. Typical allowances:
- Standard straight-lay flooring or carpet: add 5–10%.
- Diagonal or herringbone patterns: add 15–20% (much more cutting).
- Patterned tile: add 10–15%.
- Wallpaper: add 10–15% for pattern matching.
For a 120 sq ft room with a 10% allowance, you’d order about 132 sq ft. The calculator’s waste field does this for you and shows the adjusted quantity.
Estimating Flooring or Paint Cost
Once you have the area (plus waste), multiply by the price per square foot or square meter. At $3.50 per sq ft, that 132 sq ft order costs about $462. For paint, remember one gallon typically covers 350–400 sq ft, so divide your wall area by the coverage to find how many cans you need. Our calculator includes an optional price field for an instant cost estimate. Financing a bigger renovation? Our Loan Calculator shows the monthly cost, and the Percentage Calculator handles any other percentages.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate square footage?
Multiply length by width for a rectangle. A 12 ft by 10 ft room is 120 sq ft. Split odd shapes into rectangles and add them.
How do I convert square feet to square meters?
Multiply square feet by 0.0929. A 120 sq ft room is about 11.15 sq m. The calculator shows both at once.
How much extra flooring should I buy?
Add 5–10% for standard layouts, or 15–20% for diagonal and patterned ones, to cover offcuts and repairs.
