Fraction Calculator
Add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions and mixed numbers in seconds — with full step-by-step working, automatic simplification, and the decimal answer. Perfect for homework, recipes, measurements, and anyone who wants the steps, not just the result. Works for everyone, everywhere.
Enter two fractions, choose an operation, and get the simplified answer plus step-by-step working. For mixed numbers like 1½, fill in the whole-number box too.
* This calculator works with whole numbers, proper and improper fractions, and mixed numbers. Answers are automatically reduced to lowest terms, and shown as a mixed number and a decimal too. Division by zero (a denominator of 0, or dividing by the fraction 0) isn't defined, so those inputs can't be calculated. The math is universal and the same everywhere in the world.

What Is a Fraction Calculator?
A fraction calculator adds, subtracts, multiplies, and divides fractions for you — and shows the working. Enter two fractions (or mixed numbers), pick an operation, and it gives you the answer simplified to lowest terms, as a mixed number, and as a decimal. Best of all, it lays out the step-by-step solution, so it's as useful for learning how fractions work as it is for getting a quick answer.
It's handy far beyond homework: scaling a recipe, splitting measurements, woodworking, sewing, and any time numbers don't divide evenly. The math is universal, so it works the same everywhere in the world.
How to Use This Fraction Calculator
- Enter the first fraction — numerator on top, denominator on the bottom. Add a whole number for a mixed number like 1½.
- Choose an operation — add (+), subtract (−), multiply (×), or divide (÷).
- Enter the second fraction.

How to Add and Subtract Fractions
To add or subtract, the fractions need the same denominator (a common denominator). If they're different, you rewrite both over a shared bottom number, then add or subtract the tops:
Example: 1/2 + 1/3 = (3 + 2)/6 = 5/6
So 1/2 + 1/3 becomes 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6. The calculator finds the common denominator and reduces the answer automatically.
How to Multiply Fractions
Multiplying is the easiest operation — no common denominator needed. Just multiply the tops together and the bottoms together:
Example: 2/3 × 3/4 = 6/12 = 1/2
How to Divide Fractions
To divide, flip the second fraction and multiply (multiply by its reciprocal):
Example: 1/2 ÷ 1/4 = 1/2 × 4/1 = 4/2 = 2
"Keep, change, flip" is the popular memory trick: keep the first fraction, change ÷ to ×, and flip the second.
How to Simplify Fractions
Simplifying (reducing) means dividing the top and bottom by their greatest common divisor (GCD) — the largest number that divides both evenly. For 8/12, the GCD is 4, so 8/12 = 2/3. This calculator simplifies every answer automatically, so you always get the cleanest form.
Mixed Numbers and Improper Fractions
A mixed number like 1¾ combines a whole number and a fraction; an improper fraction like 7/4 has a top bigger than its bottom. They're equal (1¾ = 7/4), and you can convert between them: multiply the whole number by the denominator and add the numerator to go improper, or divide to go back. The calculator shows the answer both ways.
