Cat Age Calculator
How old is your cat in human years? Skip the old "multiply by 7" myth — this cat age calculator uses the modern veterinary method to convert cat years to human years accurately. Enter your cat's age to see their human age, life stage, and a full cat-age chart. Works for any cat, anywhere.
Enter your cat's age in years (or months for kittens) and we'll convert it to human years using the modern veterinary method, along with your cat's current life stage.
* Cat age conversions are estimates. Real aging depends on breed, genetics, diet, weight, and whether a cat lives indoors or outdoors. Treat this as a fun, useful guide rather than an exact figure. The method reflects modern veterinary thinking, but your veterinarian is the best source for your cat's actual health and life stage. This tool is for general information only.

What Is a Cat Age Calculator?
A cat age calculator converts your cat's age into human years so you can understand their true life stage. The old "1 cat year = 7 human years" rule is a myth — cats actually age very quickly in their first two years, then settle into a steadier pace. This calculator uses the modern veterinary method to tell you how old your cat is in human years, along with whether they're a kitten, adult, mature, or senior cat.
Whether you're curious, planning vet visits, or captioning a birthday photo, it gives you an accurate answer in seconds — and it works for any cat, anywhere in the world.
How to Convert Cat Years to Human Years
The widely accepted veterinary model works in clear steps:
Year 2 = +9 human years (about 24 by age 2)
Each year after 2 = +4 human years
Extra months = (months ÷ 12) × 4
Example: 3 years 6 months → 24 + (1.5 × 4) = 30 human years
So a 1-year-old cat is about 15 in human years, a 2-year-old about 24, and a 5-year-old about 36. Cats reach the equivalent of human adulthood remarkably fast.
Why the "Multiply by 7" Rule Is Wrong
The ×7 rule assumes cats age at a steady rate and all the same way — neither is true. A one-year-old cat is nothing like a 7-year-old child; it's already a fully mature young adult, closer to a 15-year-old human. Cats pack most of their fast aging into the first two years, which the ×7 myth completely misses. That's why vets use the modern step method instead.

Indoor vs Outdoor Cats
Lifestyle has a big impact on how long cats live, even if the year-to-year conversion is similar. Indoor cats commonly live 15–20 years, and some reach their early twenties, because they avoid traffic, predators, and many diseases. Outdoor and indoor-outdoor cats face more risks and often have shorter lifespans. Good nutrition, a healthy weight, and regular vet care all help your cat age well, whatever their lifestyle.
Cat Life Stages
- Kitten: 0–6 months — rapid growth and play.
- Junior: 6 months–2 years — reaching full size and maturity.
- Adult / prime: 3–6 years — healthy and active.
- Mature: 7–10 years — the feline equivalent of middle age.
- Senior: 11+ years — time for more frequent wellness checks.
